With a setting of rare beauty, the city walls start in the hill that dominates the town to descend to the town centre linking the two castles that characterise the fortified village, the Upper Castle and the Lower Castle. Formerly a Roman castrum, Marostica was caught up in the historical events of Bassano and the fortification underwent several modifications .The Lower Castle looks onto the main square where the famous chess match with real people as the pieces takes place. The Upper Castle dominates the town centre from the Pausolino Hill while the scenic path connecting the two fortresses gives a great view of the architectural and landscape beauty that the village has to offer.
